Care Routine
Clean your chinchillas cage regularly. Dirty pens or cages can cause your chinchilla's fur to become stained and encourages disease.
People tend to use either newspaper in the chinchilla's litter tray. Newspaper is to be changed daily. Wood shavings can be changed weekly.
Daily
- Rinse water bottle. Supply fresh drinking water daily.
- If there is bedding in the nest box, check it. Remove and replace any damp bedding.
- Remove any soiled hay from the cage floor to prevent the chinchilla from eating it. Discard old hay. Supply another handful of fresh hay.
- Throw away uneaten pellets. Fill bowl with a tablespoon of fresh pellets.
Weekly
- Clean the water bottle thoroughly. Algae, especially red algae, if not removed can be fatal.
- Clean any fallen sand, hay, or fur from the shelves with a brush.
- Clear away any fallen hay from the bottom of the cage. Wipe over the floor mesh with a damp cloth and hot water and dry it.
- Remove the litter tray and empty it. Wipe over the litter tray with a damp cloth and hot water and dry it. Replace wood shavings in littler tray.
- Sift the sand in the sand bath and sieve it into another container. Pour the sand back into the sand bath. Top up or replace the sand as necessary.
Monthly
- After brushing off shelves and any branches, use hot water to wash them. Leave them to dry. This will prevent mildew from forming.
- Wipe off any shed fur from around the cage with a warm, damp cloth.
